Why you Need to Start a Mom Blog

Why you need to start a mom blog

What’s stopping you from starting a blog? I’ll admit, it took me years of admiring other bloggers before I finally took the leap. I spent so much time scrolling Pinterest, wishing I could be like one of these bloggers I admired so much. I didn’t think I would have enough time with all of the duties that come with being a stay-at-home mom. What would I write about? What if no one reads it? What if I don’t make any money from it?

Starting a blog seemed scary in a lot of ways. Looking back now, it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made! The good news is, you already know what to write about!

What’s the one topic that gets you talking endlessly? You know, the one that you can chit chat about for a few hours on your play dates. What are the things that your friends are always asking your advice on? What about the things you’re really good at? Saving money? DIY projects? Essential oils?

Chances are you’re an expert in at least one or more topics and there’s TONS of ways to expand on those!

Finding your passion

What’s something that you really love doing? Or are inspiring to do? The great thing about having a blog is that you don’t always have to be an expert. People enjoy being with you for the journey! And if it’s something that you really love, you’ll learn and eventually be really good at it because, well.. you have a passion for it!

I have learned so much since I started my journey on natural living, sustainability and being a mommy. I didn’t know very much about any of those things when I first started out and began my first blog 4 years ago. As time went on, through experience and my compulsive need to research every little thing made me a a seasoned expert.

Benefits of blogging

When I first started out, I was writing as a hobby. I just wanted to be able to have a place to share my ideas and experiences. It also helped me stay accountable. I had no idea that there were so many more benefits to blogging than I could have imagined.

Having a sense of community

I don’t know what I would do if I didn’t have my blogosphere BFF’s! I have found so much support from other bloggers and have found a group of amazing moms out there who all share similar interests. I’ve been able to turn to them for so much inspiration and encouragement. I find that I’m able to relate to them as they go through the same ups and downs throughout life and we’re there to support each other.

Freedom to work when you want

I could not imagine going back to a regular 9-5 job and not be able to be with my kids every day. I’ve always felt that the first few years of their life pass by so fast and I would be devastated if I missed out on those precious moments 40 hours a week. Being there for their first steps, first words and joyously celebrating all those little moments are the reasons I love being a mom.

Having a blog gives me the freedom to write when I want (or can, I should say) and never having to say “I can’t right now,” when those tiny little arms are reaching up for me to be picked up and cuddled.

Making an income

Yes! You can make money from your blog! When I first started out, I had no clue that you could make money from a blog? Sources of income can be from sponsored posts, guest posts, affiliate marketing, ads, selling a product or teaching a course. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a little side income for family vacations? That has definitely been my goal. And it’s very doable!

Check out some of these other mom bloggers and their income reports.

  1. Gemma of Sea Side Sundays made $2,300 in her 4th month of blogging. Check out how she pulled it all off with 2 kids in her post, How I made $2,396 my 4th Month of Blogging.
  2. Melanie of The Story of Five is a homeschooling mother of three. See how she does it all with her post, 2 Side Jobs that make me 3,000+ per month as a stay at home mom.
  3. Monica of Redefining Mom is a wife and mother that made $1,135 in the first month she quit her job and began blogging full time. Read about the details of her success in her post, How to Make Money Blogging.
  4. Caroline Vencil of carolinevencil.com is a crunchy mom to 3 boys and made $9,665 in the month of June from her blog! Read her income report and see what steps she took in her post, June 2017 Blogging Income Report.

Just like you, these moms (and so many others) have started out exactly where you are to too. Just imagine where you would be a year from now if you started your blog today!

One of my favorite perks of blogging…Free stuff!

Who doesn’t love free stuff?! After you get your blog started and sign up for a few affiliate programs, there are companies that will send you free products for you to review! I’ve received things like baby carriers and household items to try out and they’ve all been products that are specific to my blog and lifestyle.

Get started!

Choose a platform

You’re going to need a platform for your blog. I would recommend using WordPress.org. I originally started my blog on a different platform and I’ve been so much happier with WordPress.org. You have so many more themes to choose from and you’re able to customize your site however you want. It’s also the industry standard and my absolute favorite compared to some of the other sites that I have tried out.

Make sure you sign up with WordPress.org and NOT WordPress.com. At first, I had no idea that there was a difference in the two but the differences are pretty significant.

WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

WordPress.com is not a self hosted site. This means that you’re limited with what you’re able to do. They only have a few options for free themes to use. You don’t have control over what plugins you want. Also, if you ever plan to make money from your blog, WordPress.com does not give you the freedom to advertize what you want freely. When I mentioned that they are not a self hosted site, it means that at any given point in time they can decide to shut down your blog and you could lose everything at a drop of a hat.

WordPress.org IS a self hosted site. It gives you total freedom to customize your blog however you want. There are a zillion themes to choose from and your plugin options are endless. And because it’s a self hosted site, it means that no one can shut you down. You’re free to advertise however you’d like and that makes a huge difference in reaching your income goals with your blog.

Get hosting

Siteground is the best hosting site that I’ve come across. I recently switched to Siteground from another host and I wish I had done it sooner! They also have a free site transfer and pretty much did everything for me, which saved me so much time! They have 99.99% uptime! Basically, this means that your site will pretty much never go down due to maintenance or any other reason. You can get their service for 3.95 a month when you sign up for Siteground using my link.

Here’s what’s included for 3.95/month:

  • 1 Website
  • 10GB of web space
  • Up to 10,000 monthly visitors
  • Free site transfer
  • 24/7 Support
  • Free email accounts
  • Free website builder
  • Free daily backup
  • 30 money back guarantee

Want to start off the right way?

It’s so exciting to be starting your blog and you’ll be learning so much along the way. I can’t think of a better way to launch yourself light years ahead than by learning from some of the most successful bloggers out there! Especially if you want to start making money from your blog! I wish I had signed up for courses when I first started my blog. It would have saved me SO much time and energy trying to figure out how to do everything on my own. The courses that I took had everything I needed to know and learn all in one place.

Here’s are 2 courses I totally recommend!

Blog By Number

Suzi Whitford from Start a Mom Blog created Blog By Number to not only get you started with your blog but also show you the way to be successful from the get go! Suzi has been such an inspiration to me because she is a stay at home mom of 2 little ones (like me) and is pregnant with her third and STILL rockin her blog business like a boss! Suzi makes $39,000 a month from her blog!

After I took the Blog by Number course, I increased my page views from 50  to 1,300 in about 2 weeks! Suzi takes you through some amazing strategies from starting your blog, finding your niche to increasing your page views and how to start making a profit.

Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing can be really confusing. Not only did I not know that I could be making money from my blog but I also had no idea that I could have monetized my blog from day one! Michelle Schroeder-Gardner of Making Sense of Cents created Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing that breaks down the biggest question, “How do I make money from my blog?” Michelle makes $50,000 a MONTH from her blog! Can you imagine what kind of experiences you could afford for your family?

My first 4 years of blogging, I made 0 dollars. That’s right, FOUR years of blogging! After I completed Michelle’s course, I made my first $50 dollars within 30 days and also started receiving free stuff from different companies that I became affiliated with. I finally was able to understand the in’s and out’s of affiliate marketing and start profiting from it.

Now you have everything you need to start your blog!

You’ll never know what may come of your blog. You could start out as just writing as a hobby like I did. I would take the time to work on it during nap times and after the kids went to bed. Even now, those are the only times that I have, about 10 hours a week.

I’ve literally written an entire blog post while in bed nursing my daughter! 😀

I started taking my blog seriously in August and already, I’m profiting from it in so many ways. I’ve made great friends in my community, I’ve learned so much from other bloggers, I got my first paycheck and free products that I absolutely love! If I can do it with 2 kids and homeschooling, I know you can do it too!

  2. Jenny says:

This a really encouraging post! I liked how you talked about finding your passion. I feel like a lot of people want to get into blogging solely to make money and it comes off totally disingenuous but fostering the passion first and then figuring a way to monetize is so important! The community is really great! I will continue to follow along your blogging journey <3

  3. This Mum At Home says:

I started blogging as I’ve had an urge to write a book every year for the last 20years lol every year I’ve wanted to write some sort of book to help people in some way … now I can write it all online and I’m loving it !

  4. Times with Kai says:

I still need to get used to this whole blogging thing. I’m typically not a social person – more of an introvert and I find it difficult to connect with other people. I’m trying though, with my mom blog and I’m also learning how to interact. I need more training lol

Absolutely! You can literally start earning immediately. The course, Making sense of affiliate marketing teaches you step by step how to start earning from the moment you start your blog. I don’t have a Facebook page for my blog at all and I made my first 50 dollars within 30 days after I took the course. 🙂 You can do it!

I am still fairly new to blogging and learning slowly. I didn’t want to just put myself out there and set myself up to fail. Right now I am trying to figure out all the hosting stuff because I want a live site that is mine by the end of the month. I am a little confused still but I want to make sure I have my ducks in a row before I hit the ground running. Your post offered some great ideas. I was wondering, if I need a little more info is it okay to reach out to you for a little assistance?

    • ConsciousEarthMama says:

Absolutely! As far as hosting goes, my fiancé is an IT professional and he (and many other IT guys) have all suggested Siteground for hosting. I used to have Bluehost and I swiped over to Siteground last month. They did a free transfer for me which was awesome! If you do decide to use Siteground, I’d be super duper grateful if you signed up with my link! It doesn’t cost you anything, it only helps support the growth of this blog. 💕Feel free to reach out to me with whatever questions you have. I’m happy to help. 😊

  8. Jenni Petrey says:

These are all great reasons for starting a blog. I started mine purely to clear my mind from the journey that we are on. Now one of my aims is to spread autism awareness and acceptance.
